Home from our little anniversary getaway. Just a day trip really and I am sorry to say that the big 200 mile garage trail wasn't the thrill I expected. I broke my own cardinal rule of garage saleing...don't go where there is an annual sale. You know the best goods are found when someone who doesn't clean out the attic every year finally has a sale. There were more antique dealers and flea market junkers along the trail than anything, Lots of depression glass on tables, lots of high prices as they anticipated hordes of gullible shoppers. Blech, not what I was looking for so we came away mostly empty handed. I ended up with a few pieces of vintage jewelry for my creations and that's it. Of course, the real reason we went was just to have some time together alone to celebrate. So the walks along the pier, the picnics in the park by the water and the time alone to talk means we did not really come away empty handed. We had a good time and it was over all too soon. This next week I plan to start on the curtains for the bedroom. I'll be keeping everyone updated on my progress and I think just for fun I'll keep a running tally of just how little this decorating project is costing. When I say I want to do it for as close to free as possible I mean it. It's a fun challenge. Only 3 more weeks of summer left for me, a daughter to get ready to move to college and my schedule is already filling up with church projects, etsy projects and, darn it all, I swear I'm going to get the flowers weeded too! How about you? Lots of projects to get done before the summer is over?

  1. Hi Kathy -
I'm so glad you and your hubby had a good time together. Away from the rush and routine of daily life. But I'm sorry to hear that the sales were a disappointment. You are right about annual sales and the price-jacking thing. I love sales where someone is downsizing after 45 years in their house. Treasures for small prices.

Can't wait to see your bedroom. You just might inspire me to get mine finished! Hope so.

  2. Yes, lots of summer projects here. We are seriously thinking about moving out of this house into a different town since my husband is retired we would like to be closer to "take out" and shopping. So we are going through all our possessions and planning a big yard sale and my summer project is painting my bedroom and I have all the furniture but the bed painted and I want to do that yet....time is ticking away, that's for sure! I can't wait to see the bedroom photos.

  4. Aw Kath I am so disappointed that you did'nt find lots of treasures for cheap!
    Bummer!!!!!!

I called my mum and told her about the sales and asked her to go for me!
I have'nt called her to see if she went or not! We had cold rainy weather all weekend here!

Glad you two had some nice alone time!

  5. I don't think my projects will be "projected" until it cools off a bit here. You can't imagine the humidity in East Texas! Feels like you had a hot towel thrown over your head whenever you step out the door. But I'll enjoy tagging along with yours!

  6. Hi, Sweetie...so glad you had a good time with your man...sorry the sale was pretty much a dud but I agree...I like to go to those kind you mentioned. Where Aunt Mabel wants to downsize so she gets up in her attic (or storage place) and cleans it out.
It is just too hot here to want to do any projects for Bill and I. We have every thing ready to install a new back fence (stimulas fence!!)
but have decided to wait until it cools off some in the fall...just too hot out there for 2 old folks!
I have paint to do a couple of rooms but, again, will wait until I am a little stronger and a whole lot more in the mood....
I am looking forward to seeing your room as you go and then having a hugh finally showing!
    'twill be fun!

  7. Kathy, Gary and I made the trip from Port Huron to just north of Forrester then turned around and drove back to Algonac. Guess what I got? Well, first we spent $1.00 to use the bathroom in this church. Then I bought bag of chips in a little store in Lexington to have with the sandwhiches I brought along for lunch and then in Port Sanilac I bought some cinnamon rolls from a Amish lady but when I read the label in the car they were actually from a local bakery! Then at our final stop Gary got some new buncey (?) for the awning. So I would agree with you and Earl, not a successful trip at all. But like you we enjoyed spending the time together! :) Happy Anniversary!

  9. I'm so glad you enjoyed your anniversary getaway! Our anniversary weekend is this weekend coming up. I was telling hubby I wanted to do the trip you took for our anniversary next year but now I am having second thoughts! You are right, the best yard sales are the non-community planned ones! Enjoy your day of curtain making!

  15. I'm so glad to hear that you had a wonderful time with your hubby. You can't put a price on that and I'm sure it was the best part of the whole trip. Too bad about the prices being so high. But it makes the hunt even more enjoyable if you do make a great find.

  20. Hi Kathy. You know we didn't find nearly as much stuff on our last trip either - at least not that we could afford. I think it's time to find a new junking route =) Well, I get to go to Marburger next month so I'm excited about that!! Blessings.. Polly (p.s. I've got a question but I'll send you an email.)

  24. I didn't know there was a yard sale up that way too. I guess our longest yard sale through tenn and ala was just a copy of yours. Sorry you didn't find the treasure of a lifetime!
