I thought I would show you the chicks while they are still little. I have them labeled by breed. I will end up with a flock of 14 hens of several different colors. The Americaunas lay blue or green eggs, all the rest lay various shades of brown and cream. They are so cute at this age!
When the babies are little like this they fall asleep on their feet every few minutes. They tip right over on their little faces with their teeny bums in the air and sleep. Too cute. The 12 year old boy next door is in love. I put a little chair in the coop so he could sit inside and watch them. He is working on naming them all:>)
Aren't they just the sweetest things? Earl and I are planning some raised beds in front of the coop, with a picket fence around it. I plan to let the hens out to scratch every once in a while once the vegetables are big enough to not get picked or trampled. Good for the garden and I love to see the hens in the yard:>) It is a beautiful sunny 70 degree day and I have some weeding and garden beds to take care of while the sun shines. I hope you all have a wonderful spring weekend! I will be making the rounds and catching up with everyone over the next week. I can't wait:>)

Keep in mind, the chickies will eat fully grown veggies! I know. Mine reached through the fence to peck at my tomatoes and my lettuce!

ReplyDeleteFirst time to your blog, seen the baby chick and couldn't resist. I have all the breeds that you show. People around here think it is a little weird to see blue/green eggs. They are used to it now :) Yes, they will eat anything in their sight. Mine are a year old now. We were supposed to have all hens, but out of 20 chicks, 4 are roosters. They are hilarious to watch when they are free ranging.

This raising chickens thing seems to be a really popular thing lately+. You are the third person I know who is raising them. I take it you don't live in the city? You are like Martha Stewart who did a segment on her show about raising chickens. I can't remember but I think she ordered a hundred or so. Fascinating.

ReplyDeletePeep! They are sooo cute! My neighbor has what seems like 100 of them but probably more like 50+. She lets hers run free. I love to stop and look at them when they are close to the road. I can't help but to roll down the window and say "Chick, chick, chick". hehehe I know my neighbor thinks I'm nuts! hahaha My husband doesn't want to get any farm animals. I wouldn't mind a few but I don't know what I would do about them when we go on vacation.
