A mini Kitchen makeover

I think by now you all know what my favorite color is. (Hint: it's red!) My kitchen walls have been red for 5 or 6 years now, a testament to how much I love the color, because most rooms in my house get a fresh coat of paint more often than that.  I loved the red, it was cozy and homey and well, gee, it was red. Nuff said:>) But lately I have been craving a lighter brighter look and I decided it was time for something new.
You would think with only a week off between semesters I would be on a beach somewhere relaxing.  Ha! no.  Instead I painted the kitchen. It was going to be white, but youngest daughter staged an intervention. The girls think I have lost my mind with all this white. They still aren't over the dining room being white. So here is the before of the kitchen. Gee it looks kind of dismal doesn't it?
And here it is in it's new color. Salt glaze by Martha Stewart.  Since I couldn't go with white I chose the palest blue I could find and I have to admit that as I put it on the walls I had major second thoughts. Color withdrawal don't you know.  But once I started putting the room back together I loved it. It is so fresh and bright and I plan to throw a few cherry red accents in here because a room without red somewhere in it, well, that would be in someone elses house.
I like the color so much that I hate my grungy cabinets a teeny bit less. My goal is to paint them white this summer, I admit to a deep fear of how much work that will be. Will it turn into the project that ate my summer? Will I have the guts/time/gumption to actually do it?  I'll let you know. Until then, I'm sitting at the counter staring at my new color and dreaming of more ways to primp this space.
Have a great weekend:>)

  1. I L♥VE IT!!! I can't escape red when I decorate. It just happens! I had a red kitchen in one house, a red dining room in another. I've now figured out that I enjoy accenting with red more than painting with it because it means more red things to give me that red fix when I'm shoppin'. Wooowhooo!

  2. I love the new look - really fresh and bright. I know what you mean about tackling kitchen cabinets - mine are already white, but they need a serious touch up and I am so chicken. I dream of hiring somebody to do it, but that's not going to happen this year. Maybe if you're brave enough, I'll be brave enough.

Enjoy your fresh new kitchen with lovely pops of red.

  4. Unbelievable! My kitchen is red and I just painted it dove grey! I also decided my cabinets need to be white and I have the exact feelings about wanting things around me to be lighter and brighter.....we are so much alike it is getting creepy ;-)

I will be blogging soon about all my decor changes...out with all the dark in with the light!

  5. Kathy, this looks great! I have read several blogs lately where people have painted their cabinets and loved it. If you go to my blog, click on Tattered Hydrangeas either on my sidebar and my profile page and check out Lou Cinda's project. She painted her cabinets white, and they look great. Someone else did, too, but it's escaping me right now. I think you should go for it! I say that because I want to work up my courage to do the same. ;-)

    XO,

    Sheila :-)

  6. Oh my goodness! I love the new color. It's so cottagey. I can really envision your cabinets white. It must not be that hard to do. I see it done in blogland all the time. Great job on your walls. Covering that red isn't easy.

  12. I love it...what a beautiful difference. I'd love to paint mine cabinets too but there is that fear poking it's head up!

  13. Wow! What a lovely fresh nbew look - and the amount of detail that comes through is exciting. Nothing to be afraid of in painting cabinets, just be sure you take off the doors and lay them flat for ease of painting and also be sure you put a note on each one as to where it belongs - I once did a large kitchen with 32 cupboard doors and what fun getting them back where they belonged!!!

  14. Hey Kathy - WONDERFUL choice for the wall color in the kitchen - it is so fresh and beautiful, and still a base color that will work with pops of red...LOVE it!!! Let me encourage you about the cabinets...yes, they are quite an undertaking...a small sponge roller (Home Depot has them) makes jobs like that easier in my book (I fret over brush lines so much, so the sponge roller eliminates that) Plus, good old Kilz to start things off with...One of the main things is to have enough room to leave the cabinets set up so they can be done in stages, if possible. One more tip to help get the cabinets back in the right place - with a small Sharpie on the inside of the cabinet doors, write "upper sink left" or "lower stove right" or some code to help you remember where they went, then simply cover the writing with a small piece of painters tape...then when you paint the doors, just paint right over the tape...after it's all complete and dry and ready to go back, just pull the tape off to easily see where the door goes! Then you can paint over that after it's in place...it's just a small area...

I believe you can do it friend!!...you'll LOVE the results!!!

Have a nice school break - and happy return to the books... You're doing GREAT!!!

    Hugs and Blessings,
    Becky

  16. Wow it looks so much bigger. I too love red and completely understand the need to brighten up your kitchen work space. It looks beautiful.

And kudos to you for not just talking about it but actually putting brush to wall and getting it done!! So many of us, myself included, just talk about what we want but not always doing it.

  17. I really like the change! I liked the red, but this is very fresh and pretty.

(You know my bias already, but...) Don't you think the cabinets would just blend in to the beadboard and counters if you paint them? Summer's too short to spend painting those cabs...

    See you tomorrow!

  18. I too have a thing for red! but I am loving that blue!!! So, so cute! Have a great week end.

  19. Love your new kitchen! The color is just right and it will be great with some red added. I painted my cabinets white and I've never regretted it for a minute. I love them white - they are definitely worth the work!

  21. Well you know I LOVE red too so I was a bit worried at first....but I LOVE it! It looks so fresh and airy and I love the toile curtain with that color. I think your cabinets painted white would be just stunning. It won't take long - I think it took me two weeks but that's because I used a latex primer and had to let it cure a week. So go for it!

  23. Love the new color in the kitchen! I'm trying to suck it up enough to paint my kitchen cabinets - they are the pre-finished kind so I'm a little scared of painting them but I can't stand the dark color! (we just moved into this house in October) I had white cabinets in my last house and LOVED them.

  24. It looks fabulous!!! Very cottagey. I had a red kitchen for years also and loved it, but then I needed something lighter too and painted it pale yellow. So fun! Had a bunch more compliments on my purse today! :)

  27. Oh, I love the kitchen in white!! Be brave, we painted our cupboards white last summer and just love it! It brightened up the kitchen so much and is so easy to clean with a damp cloth. We did use outdoor white because outdoor paint can take such a beating! Hugs, K

  29. As long as you keep some red in there! LOL! My daughter is doing better. We've lost pets before but this was her first pet of her very own so it was tough. Thank you for the sweet comments.

  32. I love the fresh look. You chose a beautiful color, and that is coming from a kindred spirit red girl. Paint is the best decorating tool always!

I hope your Internet is back soon. Enjoy your break! I hope school is going well.

  34. It does look so nice and I too want to paint my cabinets too...but...we won rentals that have painted cabinets and it is just terrible to go in there and repaint them as each set of renters move out....So I will not be painting my cabinets but I changed the wall color and the cabinet pulls and the decorations and I am happy with it. Maybe some door pulls would help out for a new look. Dianntha

  35. I LOVE this new color. The red was pretty, too, but we crave lightness during the summertime, I think.

Now, My Darlin' Clementine...if you will bite the bullet and sand, prime and paint those cabinets a beautiful, snowy white, you will
sing and shout and dance about. You will just LOVE them! I just know it!!
White with black iron handles, knobs and hinges...oh honey !!

  36. Oh Kathy I love the new look!
I do loooooove red but this looks nice and fresh and summery!
Go ahead and paint those cabinets!
I spent last week painting the insides of the cabinets at the new house....still have to decide what colors I want to use on the outside cabinets and the walls!

    God Bless,
    Dolly

P.S. keep the reds, they really pop and make me smile!

  37. It looks so bright and summery! Love the red too. What to do!
I don't think your cabs look grungy at all. Just get some hardware, it will change the look.
I am not a fan of painted cabinets. I think the wood looks so much richer. And I know mine would be chipped in no time with the gkids smashing into them.

  38. I used to have a red room too and I got tired of it. I do like your new color!
