25 Days of Christmas ~ The Gingerbread House

I missed posting yesterday. It had been my intent to post every day until Christmas but it was a very busy day. First church, then lunch out, a snooze in the big chair by the Christmas tree then we made dinner for our favorite boy and his parents, and Uncle Art. Dinner was amazing, (if I do say so myself), grilled venison roast, roasted potato wedges, a wonderful salad brought by our guests, and pumpkin pie with whipped cream. And for anyone who doesn't care for venison (and that turns out to be no one in our family!) I made a Baked Garlic Brown Sugar Chicken recipe that I found on Pinterest.
Lord have mercy! It was super easy, fast and it tasted amazing. I made it with boneless skinless chicken thighs and I can't wait to make it again.
After dinner I whipped out this gingerbread house kit to decorate with my godson.
It was a blast.  I had extra candies and chocolate chips for him to use. This was my first time making one of these, the end pieces came cracked so I hot glued them to cardboard. Holy smokes, who makes these things? I tried putting it together with the frosting, I really did. I ended up using hot glue to hold it together and warning him that only the candy decorations would be edible.
He was alright with that.
Sorry for the blurry pictures, little boys move so fast.
We sent him home at bedtime with the house he made and a bag of extra candy.  Sorry parents!
In spite of how frustrating the house was to put together, I loved this project. It was nice to have a little one around to do a Christmas project with!
Do you have some littles to do projects with?

  1. I have never been tempted one little bit to make a gingerbread house! Looks too hard. I'll let my granddaughter do that with her Mom. I'll stick to frosted sugar cookies and sprinkles. But that chicken recipe looks divine. I pinned it and hopefully will get to try it soon. Simple recipes for me always!

And I have even thought of making a gingerbread house...hmmm.

Oh, I must pin that recipe based on your rave review. Thank you!

  3. It turned out very cute. No littles to do projects with around here this year. I am off to check out that chicken recipe (I am one of those who do not like venison)

  4. That turned out cute! I never had any luck with making a gingerbread house. I never could get the sides to stick together. For a while we made candy houses and then fortunately my daughter lost interest in the whole thing :)

I've never had venison so I don't know if I like it or not and that chicken recipe looks great!

  5. Isn't hot glue amazing! I don't think I would have had the nerve to make a gingerbread house, Kathy!

  6. When my kids were little we went to a gingerbread house exhibit. So every year for about ten years I made one. They are very hard to do and frustrating! I will buy one of the premade ones for our grandson:)
BTW, yours turned out cute and so is the little guy!

  8. if you do this again next year, find something called edible parchment paper (I get it a cake decorating place near me, and Amazon sells it). If you can remove those windows, it will also give the appearance of frosty glass and can be drawn on with edible markers (window sashings, curtains, wreaths) - then you put a little royal icing on it and cover the cracks from the inside. To make the house, use a star tip and lay down a thick line of frosting, then stand your first piece in the middle of the line. Have someone hold that and do another line at one side and down the edge of the first piece. Put the second piece in the center of the second line and smoosh it up to the edge of the first piece. Hold them for a couple of seconds and repeat for the remaining 2 sides. To add the roof, run the thick line of frosting along the edges of the front/back/side pieces and gently add one side, do the same to the other side remembering to run a line along the edge of the first roof piece. Lots of frosting - no glue - all edible. Messy, but fun.

  9. You know I've never made one of those...always looked to complicated to me. Your little buddy looks happy though, my little ones are so busy each evening with sports, brownies and church I doubt they would have time:)

  10. Sweet! He's adorable and the little house is something he will never forget! And, dear friend, how did you season and prepare your grilled venison roast? We have venison in the freezer - fresh this year. And we love it!
