You Can Make Your Own Greek Yogurt

Yes you can. It's easy and with the price of Greek yogurt at $2 for a small serving it will save you a ton of money!  I first saw this recipe here, and with these directions we have been making our own for over a year now. Grocery store cost = $2 for 6 oz.  Our cost= $2.50 for about a half gallon!
Greek yogurt is thick and creamy and so good for you! We make the yogurt overnight in the crock pot and strain it through extra large coffee filters to get rid of most of the watery whey so it gets stand up on your spoon thick.  With a little practice you will get pretty consistent results, and you can't beat the price! A little honey, a little fresh fruit, and you have a great start to your day:>)
I've added this link to my recipes page. If you give it a try let me know what you think. If you need help, email me, I'll be glad to help you through it.
Enjoy!

  1. It looks delicious! How long does it last after you make it? Would it stay in the fridge for 2 weeks?

  2. I believe it would Penny. Earl usually keeps some back to start the next batch and we have held it well over a week and it's fine. The rest usually gets consumed pretty quickly:>)

  6. Hey Kathy,

Can you believe I have never has Greek yogurt!

My Lebanese grandmother always made her own yogurt, but of course it was not sweetened at all, so as a kid, I hated it.

My have to try your recipe, since I really love yogurt.

I've been wanting to try Greek yogurt, but as you say it is pricey.
I'm decluttering and almost put the crock pot in the to-go pile!
    So this is definitely timely.

  10. And don't throw out the whey!

We use it as a buttermilk replacement in pancakes and waffles with great results.

  11. Well, I am sure going to try this. I hope I can do it...I LOVE Greek yogurt.
I also love the idea of KAREN'S to save the whey for cooking. Wonder how long it would stay good...guess about like buttermilk.
    Great ideas here.

  13. Kathy, you have been very industrious this past month! Your peach jam jars made me drool. Your jars looked beautiful all lined up, and I'm sure the jam is just as delicious as the jars look.
