One Set of Dishes

Earl and I were having dinner with friends recently.  I admired her dishes and she explained that they were the every day dishes that she had purchased years ago when she was first married, and that she liked them so much they were the only set she owned and used.
Earl's reply? "Yeah, we only have one set of dishes too."  I could only look at him and wonder who he had been living with for 34 years. "We only have one set of dishes?"
Well, ok. There is the set of plain white dishes that I won in a giveaway a couple years ago. We use them the most right now.
And then there is the set of brown transferware that I use for Thanksgiving dinners. I picked up the set at Salvation Army for a song, one of my best finds yet.
Of course I love my set of red transferware too. Picked up at Marshalls years ago. I have been thinking of swapping the white ones out for these for a while just for a change. I lve red.
And then the set of Johnson Brothers rose chintz that we have used for years for Christmas and Easter. The girls love these :>) Those came from the church garage sale. Another steal at $15 for a big box of everything from dinner plates to salad plates and tea cups and saucers.
And you do remember the Wedgewood that I bought at the garage sale a couple years ago? $2 a plate, and I meant to put them in the etsy shop but I. just. can't. If I ever find more of these I'm adding to the set. You were with me at the garage sale. remember those?
And of course this sweet little tea and dessert set that you bought me just because I fell madly in love with them at an estate sale.   I didn't pull out the odds and ends of pretty dishes that I mix and match.
One set of dishes?  I don't think so.

How about you, are you a dish lover too?

  1. All of your dishes are beautiful Kathy. Remember when I used to break beautiful dishes just for the fun of it? People used to take me to task for it.

Anyway, I have a few different sets of dishes, but as Mr. Comforts and I talk about moving/downsizing I am thinking about getting rid of some of them. We will be far away from our friends, so I am not sure how much entertaining we will do.

  2. Yes, I am a dish lover. But I culled back to 2 sets of dishes and my Xmas set because I simply don't have the room for anything else. BUT ...... if I could find cheap transferware! Boy, oh boy! I'd find a spot soon enough to keep them.

  4. Oh how funny! Did he really think y'all had two sets or was he being silly? All of them that you have are beautiful and absolutely necessary!! I love your red and white ones, of course, my aunt just sent me about 14 more red and white transferware plates last week. Now I have plenty to display and to eat from.

  6. I've had that same reaction to my husband of 34 years! I sometimes wonder where he lives! LOL! By the way, it's all beautiful but I love the red transferware. Wow! I'm still laughing at your husband's remark and your reaction. My daughter bought me a set of dishes from Kohl's a few years ago I loved so much that I ordered enough for 12. That aught to feed the family for a few years to come. After breaking a couple of pieces, I ordered some corelle for everday use. I wonder when he'll notice. Guess he's more interested in what's on the plate. :D

  7. Oh, men!!
I love transferware, but my favourite dishes are the white porcelain ones, similar to your Wedgwood, that I bought in France years ago. They are so simple.

  10. Hi Kathy,
I love all of your dishes. I adore dishes, and although most of them are back home in Massachusetts, I am finding new ones here in North Carolina. Food taste better on pretty dishes.

  14. Kathy,

This is so funny. Earl is like Al so much. The only time Al notices my dishes is when I am buying them!! I packed a lot away and will donate them soon, I just wasn't using them. I do love dessert or salad plates to mix and match with white dishes so I pick them up from time to time if I love the pattern and price.

Thanks for your visit. It's amazing what you can do with one hand when it comes to cooking, but without a stove..ugh. I just scrolled down and saw your apple pie recipe so I am Pinning that. I had a great pie crust recipe and lost it, but the key was to use shortening AND butter for the best results, so I was so happy to see this, not one or the other. I am going to get baking as soon as I hit the grocery store for some fruit!

Happy fall...isn't the weather wonderful (no rain here!)?

  17. Kathy, I hate to say this but I've got some major "dish envy" going on! :-) I love all of them. That brown transfer ware is just gorgeous. And Salvation Army find??? Oh my word, how awesome was that. I have to say, though, that the darling little tea cups and plates are so precious, my heart kind of went pitter patter! :-) Loved this post! - Dori -

  19. I sure am! Yours are beautiful! I LOVE the last picture. Do you know if they have a pattern name or a manufacturer? I'd like to see if I could find some. (I need more dishes like I need a hole in my head) Mimi

  20. ROFL! THAT is too funny!

I'm a dish lover but I'm going to have to get rid of some. I'm going to get rid of my Spode blue transferware and I think I'm going to sell my set of brown transferware (as soon as I figure out how to ship them safely).

I do love that last little set you showed - they look so very Mary Englebreit :)

  22. On one of our moves my parents and MIL came to help unpack and complained about the number of dishes that I had. We dish-lovers get each other. I'll have to show mine and hope my family doesn't read the blog that day! Love your pretty dishes!
