Playing Catch Up

Well goodness, I can't believe it has been nearly two months since I posted! I originally planned on taking the month of August off.  There seemed to be less and less people posting over the summer months and it seemed like a great time to get some things done and enjoy the last of summer.  Earl and I enjoyed a simple day out for our Anniversary, out to Ann Arbor for the day, hitting the little shops, farmer's market and ethnic restaurants. There is never anything going on in early August so we plan on a fun little trip later.
The following week I came down with what was diagnosed as a sinus infection and spent the week mostly in bed, and after a round of antibiotics and no improvement I returned to the Dr. and ended up in the hospital for emergency surgery.  Nothing serious, I'm really all better at this point but between the week I was ill, the surgery week and a week of recovery there went August!

The beginning of August I enjoyed the lushness of the garden. Everything was blooming and growing so beautifully.
The sunflower in the upper left corner now looks like the sunflower in the center bottom row. Still beautiful in a way as it provides seed for the birds we love to watch so much!
The back porch under the pergola was dripping with flowers. Unfortunately, 3 weeks of neglect as I recovered means the hanging baskets are going in the trash and will need to be replaced with something else.
We had a bumper crop of cucumbers just as I got sick.  After my surgery I had to throw them all away. Fortunately we had been able to share some with friends and family, at least someone got to enjoy them!
This past weekend a dear friend from Florida came for the weekend and we had a great time catching up. This weekend we have another big party to prepare for.  Barbecue for 30!  Another bumper crop of apples means I plan on making some fresh cider.  September is a busy time, but this year I am enjoying the coolness so much after a blistery week or two in August.  I know, those of you who have entire blistery summers are laughing at this Michigan girl, Lol. I admit I have a very narrow comfort zone when it comes to temperatures.
I hope to continue to catch up with everyone  and get back on the blogging bandwagon.  I'm ready for a come back :)

I'm so sorry to hear of your sinus troubles and surgery too. How horrible. I'm so glad you're better now.
Your flowers still look beautiful to me and I admire all of your garden bounty. Maybe someday...

  7. I wondered where you were!! Well bless your heart. You had sinus surgery? My MIL had that a few years ago and it didn't look fun at all. I am glad you are on the mend. Welcome back. :)

  8. Welcome back! So glad that you are here feeling lots better. That was no way to spend August! Too bad about the posies and the cukes. It is certainly true that one can't do it all! Hope that we see you more often in fall and that you have a wonderful September.

  9. So sorry to hear of your surgery, but happy to know you are on the mend. I agree with you on the heat. The first part of summer was so pleasant with lots of rain. The last half has been hot with no rain. The gorgeous green lawns of Virginia are now a fading brown. Mornings are delightfully chilly now though. Your mention of apples, reminded me of your apple pies. Hope to make it to an orchard next weekend. Take care!!

  11. Glad you're feeling better - sorry for that little unfortunate interruption. I'm moaning here looking at the yummy pickling cucumber. Mine are long gone and I miss them a bunch. Have a great Fall season. I'm a Michigan girl too!

  12. Happy to hear you are feeling better and glad to see you back. Zinnias have come one of my favorite annuals this year and will use every year in my garden. I just made a batch pickles from the farmer's market and sorry you missed out on yours.

  13. It seems that I get a sinus infection every year after the heat comes on and it is dry inside the building. For the last two years, I have chopped up two or three raw garlic and have eaten them on toast like garlic bread when I get the sinus infection. Everyday. Within just a few days it is gone. I understand that there are 90 antibiotics in raw garlic. It works like a miracle for me.

  14. Bless your heart...I am so sorry you were sick or recovering most of Aug...and sorry flowers died and cukes were wasted but sometimes things like this just happen. I am just glad to know that you are feeling good again.
I wish I had some of your apples to make an apple pie...I'm hungry for one...but I do have cherries to make a pie...pie is my favorite of all desserts.
OOO, and, no, I didn't use chalk paint...mainly because it's too expensive for me...I used the sample size ($6) from SW..Light French Gray ...there's a Dark French Gray that is really pretty, too.
