Anywho, I needed a new nightgown and I couldn't think of anything more comfy for the sweltery nights of summer than cotton sheeting. So I took a little trip to Salvation army and found a beautiful old sheet for $6. It was all cotton and as luck would have it, it was trimmed along the top with beautiful crochet lace. I decided I would use this edge as the bottom of the skirt. I also had a vintage pillwcase trimmed in the most delicate white tatting, and it had begun to come off.
I removed it from the pillowcase the rest of the way and amazingly enough it was the exact size I needed to go around the neckline of my gown. I say amazing because I just willy nilly cut the neckline freehand with no thought of the trim. I love it when things work out like that! So there you have it, a new nightgown from a $6 sheet. Easy as could be, crisp, cool, and cheap! If you do this make sure you look for all cotton. I am not a poly lovin girl, I think it's hot and it pills and it doesn't get all crisp and filled with fresh air and sunshine on the line like cotton does. I'm going to be in the lookout for vintage sheets in soft pastel prints to make some more cute nighties. It feels so good to be back at the sewing machine after so long away:>)
What projects are you working on for the summer?
P.S. For those who wanted to see the whole nightgown, wow, it's really hard to get a picture of an ankle length nightgown! I ended us scrunching it up on the chair so all the lace showed. Not the greatest photo but I can tell you, it was so comfy last night!

Ok, full view tomorrow. I'm out of light for taking a photo at the moment:>)
What a wonderful idea!! I have several vintage cotton sheets and lots of pillowcase trim. And I totally agree: Cotton is the only thing to make bed clothes out of. But, what pattern did you use? I can't wait to see it!!
Patricia :o)
the sad (or wonderful?) thing is, she probably didn't use a pattern. she probably just decided to be awesome and freestyle it. ugh. sometimes her talent makes me sick ;)
My you are clever! Glad your getting some time to sew and enjoy the summer!
Hugs.

How smart that is, and what a pretty gown you've ended up with. laurie
Now that is a great idea. That little trim makes it so feminine. Mimi
That is so creative. I never would have thought of doing something like this!

Oh my gosh...you are too talented...How did you do that from a sheet. I've been sewing for over 40 years and the best I can do without a pattern is a shower curtain!!
What a great idea! Love how feminine it looks and I bet it is oh so comfy.
It's so pretty and feminine! Being able to sew is such a wonderful skill to have. It's just amazing to me that you didn't even use a pattern and I love that you went to the thriftstore for a sheet instead of the fabric store. You are so creative and talented!
Manuela

My daughter has a long break for summer - then she's back to school too! Hope you do well, I sure look forward to seeing more of your creations!

Oh Kathy! It is absolutely gorgeous! I wish I had your sewing abilities. I have a beautiful white (all cotton) table cloth that would be perfect.
Enjoy your sewing time. :o)

What a great idea Kathy. Your nightgown is lovely too. I was in a Vintage shop today and they had French sheets. I stood there and thought the possibilities are endless. If you sew that is.
P.S. Those cupcakes for the 4th of July look delicious.
Karen
Oh Kathy you are so talented.
I love the night gown! I bet it feels wonderful against your skin.
Such a great idea!

Your gown turned out beautiful! Love the crochet and tatting. I am wanting to have our kitchen painted and changed from a dark burgandy to white. Yours looks wonderful. One of our friends says he will paint it when it gets cooler. After seeing yours, I can hardly wait.
Love,
Marie
